الْعَظِيمُ

Al-ʿAzim

1. Explanation of the Name

Al‑ʿAẓīm comes from the root ع‑ظ‑م (ʿ‑Ẓ‑M), meaning “to be great,” “to be magnificent,” and “to have grandeur.” This Name proclaims that Allah is The Magnificent, The Supreme in Greatness, whose majesty and glory surpass all that we can imagine.

As The Supreme Great One, His greatness is infinite and beyond comparison; every creature is tiny before His magnificent power and wisdom.

2. About This Name

Al‑ʿAẓīm appears in the Qur’an to remind us of Allah’s unparalleled grandeur and the awe He inspires.

“He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior, the Most Generous, the Forgiving, the Responsive, the Majestic (Al‑ʿAẓīm), the Knowing...”
— Qur’an 59 : 23

Recognizing Allah as Al‑ʿAẓīm humbles our hearts before His magnificence and calls us to glorify Him in all our thoughts and actions.

3. Spiritual Reflection

Reflecting on Al‑ʿAẓīm invites us to cultivate awe and reverence, acknowledging that every blessing we enjoy comes from His supreme greatness.

“And of the people is he who buys [the amusement of] speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.”
— Qur’an 31 : 6
