الْغَفُورُ

Al-Ghafur

1. Explanation of the Name

Al‑Ghafūr comes from the root غ‑ف‑ر (GH‑F‑R), meaning “to forgive,” “to cover,” and “to conceal.” This Name proclaims that Allah is The Oft‑Forgiving, who pardons sins repeatedly and veils our faults with His vast mercy.

As The Ever‑Forgiving, He forgives beyond what we can imagine—no sin is too great, and sincere repentance is always met with His pardon.

2. About This Name

Al‑Ghafūr appears throughout the Qur’an reassuring believers of Allah’s willingness to forgive those who sincerely turn back to Him.

“And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
— Qur’an 4 : 110

Invoking Al‑Ghafūr in du‘ā opens the door to rehabilitation of the soul, covering past mistakes and restoring dignity.

“O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful (Al‑Ghafūr).”
