الرَّحْمَٰنُ

Ar-Rahman

1. Explanation of the Name

Ar-Raḥmān (ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ) comes from the root ر-ح-م (R-Ḥ-M), meaning “to have mercy,” “to show compassion,” and “to be kind.” This Name proclaims that Allah is The Entirely Merciful, whose compassion extends boundlessly to all of creation.

As The One Whose Mercy Encompasses Everything, He pours out kindness without measure, sustaining every living being by His grace.

2. About This Name

Ar-Raḥmān is the first of the “Most Merciful” pair (Ar-Raḥmān and Ar-Raḥīm) in the Basmala, opening every chapter of the Qur’an (except one) with His mercy.

“ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْآنَ”
— Qur’an 55 : 1

Invoking Ar-Raḥmān reminds us that the revelation itself is a gift of mercy, teaching and guiding us by divine compassion.

3. Spiritual Reflection

Reflecting on Ar-Raḥmān invites us to embody compassion in our own lives, extending mercy to others as He has shown to us.

“And My mercy encompasses all things,”
— Qur’an 7 : 156
Reflection prompt:
Recall a moment when you felt overwhelmed—softly whisper “Yā Raḥmān” and feel His comforting mercy wash over you.
Action step:
Today, perform one small act of kindness—give sincere forgiveness, share a kind word, or help someone in need—as a reflection of Allah’s mercy.
