الْقَابِضُ

Al-Qabid

1. Explanation of the Name

Al‑Qābid comes from the root ق‑ب‑ض (Q‑B‑D), meaning “to constrict,” “to withhold,” and “to tighten.” This Name proclaims that Allah is The Withholder and Controller, who withholds or grants provisions, sustains or eases hardships, all according to His perfect wisdom.

As The One Who Constrains, He commands the ebb and flow of resources, health, and circumstances—tightening what needs discipline and releasing what brings relief.

2. About This Name

Al‑Qābid appears alongside Al‑Bāsit in the Qur’an to remind us of Allah’s balanced management of all affairs.

“He it is Who spreads out the earth and places therein firm mountains and rivers; and of all fruits He makes two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for people who reflect.”
— Qur’an 13 : 3

Invoking Al‑Qābid teaches us trust in His timing—knowing that constriction often precedes growth and that every tightening serves a greater purpose.

3. Spiritual Reflection

Reflecting on Al‑Qābid encourages patience and resilience when provisions seem scarce—trusting that Allah’s withholding can refine our dependence on Him.

“And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He touches you with good – then He is over all things competent.”
— Qur’an 6 : 17
